scholar took place at Yale, the very belly of the Enlightenment beast, and whose career as a teacher has been entirely within the framework of the secular academy (10 years at Indiana University’s Department of Religious Studies) and Protestant seminaries (6 years at Yale Divinity School and 10 years at Candler School of Theology at Emory University). These are my (perhaps idiosyncratic) perceptions of a story in which I have been a participant, not the detached analysis of a disinterested observer.
